UK’s best Christmas gift ideas for gardeners: an unusual list for someone who has everything :D

This article was last updated on November 22nd, 2021 at 5:14 am

Christmas will be here before you know it, and most of you will have probably started your Christmas shopping weeks ago, if not longer. If you’ve been wondering what to get for that special, green-fingered member of your family, but just can’t decide, then maybe these ideas will put you on the right track. Personally, I think we gardeners are some of the hardest to buy for. I mean, who else would open up a new garden trowel and fork set on Christmas day with a smile and say ‘just what I wanted!’ and mean it? 😀 They’ve already got six of those and half a dozen of the other. So as well as these common gardeners gifts – we’ve got some unusual ideas for those gardeners who seem to have everything 🙂

New for Christmas 2021 and an absolute must have is the GardePro A3S Wildlife Camera. Why can’t you go wrong with this? Well for a start it’s the best wildlife camera in the UK at the moment and I only just updated that article so can guarantee you that you are getting the very best in terms of quality and value for money.

Wildlife camera

Before you dive right in on that though, please do check the best trail camera and wildlife camera page to be sure there isn’t something that would suit your recipient that bit better for Christmas!

Have you even heard of a Bird box camera? I hadn’t until I found one whilst researching and then successfully installed my first one. This might be just the present your looking for then as I’ve been gardening for a fair while before I stumbled on this. It’s ideals for the type of gardener that absolutely loves attracting birds to their garden – believe me, I am one of them too.

For a fuller understand take a look at the bird box camera page – it’s sure to provide you with all the detail you need to improve your chances of getting that gardener the right one!

high on the list of unusual gifts and presents is a weather station in my opinion. Not many people have one and it’s that kind of novelty item that doesn’t seem tacky or gimmicky. And although this one is the 2019 model, rest assured it’s a super buy. Even the most advanced gardeners will get a kick out of it and I’d have a little browse of my actual weather stations article to get a fuller understanding if this peaked your interest.

Weather station

Since covid and the lock downs pop up gazebo options and choice have been all the rage and expanded considerably. Not just because people want to meet outside, but actually, it’s a safe and clean way to meet each other with Covid still lurking around, especially in the UK. It’s pretty obvious that outdoor gatherings are a better bet than indoor so this Christmas might go more smoothly with the best pop up gazebo. I’d take 5 minutes to visit my page and understand them fully before diving in though as there is quite a lot to understand – just know the 3 by 3 ABCCANOPY is a top top option.

Pop Up Gazebo

5. Greenbay Sun Shade Sail Outdoor Garden Patio Party Sunscreen

Who would have thought of a shade sail? They are an up and coming item in the UK that work both for Sun and rain – ideal for Winter too then. This one is the top seller on our shade sail page and I’d recommend visiting the entire page to have a look at what might be most appropriate for your relative. This one is a cracker though as you’ll see as you go through the review.

Gardeners are always looking for new things to have a go at growing, or even just new techniques and tips that will help us improve. Yes, I know the internet is full of sites just like this one that provide a great deal of help and knowledge, but there’s something about a physical book that just can’t be beat.

With books on every gardening topic imaginable, from general gardening tips to specialised subjects such as growing herbs at home, it should be fairly easy to find something that you know that a gardener in your life will appreciate.

And if you’re buying for someone just getting into gardening, I couldn’t recommend this classic more.

More and more kids are getting interested in gardening and growing their own crops and plants. These sprout pencils are the perfect present for children such as them, or a great way to get your kids started on their gardening journey, and teaches them about sustainability.  These may look like ordinary pencils, and can be used as such, but the thing with these is that they contain a seed in the end. So, once they become too short to use anymore, you simply plant them in the ground and they will grow into various plants.

Our pick of the bunch are these that have special messages on the side-

A great pair of gardening gloves are worth their weight in gold to an avid gardener, so why not make their Christmas a special one by buying them a nice new pair? Christmas is the perfect time to buy someone new gloves, as they will be getting plenty of use in the following months, especially when Spring comes.

See? I told you this guide was ‘handy’. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself, I’ve a weakness for puns.

You can take our advice and go with these very popular gardening gloves instead-

Our gardening hand tools are some of the most utilised pieces of our gardening toolboxes, so we are always ready to welcome a gift of new ones to replace the old. These sets are great as they contain multiple tools, not just one, so you can be fairly sure that they will be accepted with a smile.

What’s more is that you don’t have to spend too much to get a decent set as they are usually very fairly priced. A bit of advice though: I would go with a trusted brand and pay a few more pounds than buy the cheapest available.

If you’re not sure which brand is with the money, we believe this one to offer good value-

Most homes are lit up brightly with lights at Christmas, but some gardeners would really appreciate a nice set of garden lights for their garden that they can use all year round. The variety of garden lights available is quite staggering, from small fairy lights and ornamental candle holders, to lanterns and modern spotlights.

Garden Lighting

You could even surprise that gardener by installing them without their knowledge and then inviting them outside for a grand illumination.

Our pick of the bunch, are these stunning Ruyilam solar lights that come in a pack of four. Not only do they save on the electric bill with their solar panels, they mimic dancing flames at night. Quite beautiful-

For those gardeners who just love nature, nothing would please them more than a bird feeder or bird bath that will entice our winged friends down into the garden. Winter is a very hard time for birds as the ground is usually too solid for them to penetrate to find food, and there are not as many berries and nuts around to eat. Gifting a bird feeder to be installed in your friend or family members garden is sure to help the birds, and bring a big smile to that person too, as they watch nature at its best.

Bird bath

Personally though, I have my eye on this one for its classical styling and robust cast iron design-

We gardeners are a practical lot, and we like nothing better than new tools. Well, unless you’re talking about a spanking new tool belt to keep them in that is. A garden tool belt is something that you never knew you needed until you actually use one. Having your favourite hand tools right there when you need them, really helps to speed up any gardening task, and stops slightly absent minded people like myself  misplacing, and spending 15 minutes looking for them.

My favourite, is the classic looking, yet extremely practical Esschert belt that you can find here-

Long gone are the days of hanging baskets being thought of as something only your granny would be interested in. These days, thanks to a massive variety of materials and designs, hanging planters are a sure win when it comes to buying Christmas gifts for gardeners, of any age.

The sizes, styles, and prices actually vary more than you would think, but most can be bought fairly cheaply.

The ones I’ve had my eye on recently are these Umbra Trigg geometric planters-

People say you either love wind chimes or hate them, but I personally find that most people find the sound of them relaxing, and they make excellent Christmas gifts for gardeners. You’ve got to be a bit careful with the one that you buy though for a few reasons. Firstly, is build quality. Cheap wind chimes will fall apart after very little time, especially if someone bumps into it, which is inevitable.

The second thing to be aware of is that different wind chimes have different sounds, and not only that, some will chime much more often than others. I love wind chimes, but I swapped my old one that would go off at the slightest breeze for this one-

Winter may be upon us presently, but before you know it, the sun will be back out, and every gardener in the UK will be trying to grab as many hours outside as they can.
In summer, we can sometimes forget about protecting our heads from the sun, and this can actually be dangerous, risking sunstroke, or at least painful sunburn on the back of our necks and faces.

A gardening hat that provides good shade for the head and face, and even better: one that has cover for the back of the neck, can be a gift that keeps on giving come summertime.
Here’s the one that I currently wear. I feel it gives me nice protection from the sun, without being too heavy or uncomfortable-

If you’re not a gardener yourself, you’re probably wondering what I’m talking about when I say secateurs. They are basically just a pruning tool that you hold in one hand, and we gardeners use them a lot, so buying us a nice shiny new pair would almost definitely be appreciated.

You can buy secateurs separately, or as part of a set. This set comes complete with a pair of ratchet secateurs that makes cutting much easier, and a sharpener. They are made by a trusted brand, so I think they’d  be a good buy-

Plant pots. You can never have too many, and they do make excellent Christmas gifts for gardeners.  The great thing about plant pots is, like hanging baskets, they come in all sorts of shapes, colours, and sizes, so it shouldn’t be too much of a chore to find something that will match your gardeners’ style or taste.

There are even services that can make personalised plant pots where you can have images and messages inscribed on them should you wish, and they can be found online with a simple google search.

Amazon also has a great selection, so you can have them delivered straight to your door in this time of lockdowns and covid-19 restrictions. I recently bought these for a friends birthday and she loves them-

Hose pipes are one of those things that we have to replace quite often due to splitting or just damage caused by UV.  One of the most annoying things about new hose pipes, is that they are sometimes very stiff and will curl themselves back up every time you let go of them. The latest hose pipes are known as expandable hoses, and these aim to eradicate the frustration we just mentioned by elongating and expanding themselves when water is run through them at pressure, and then they retract themselves once the water is turned off and drained out, saving storage space. Pretty useful huh?

Our pick for best hose available at the moment is this one-

Planting bulbs can be quite a tiring affair, involving digging up lots of earth, planting and then replacing the soil again.

What bulb planters aim to do, is to cut down on unnecessary digging, and for the most part they work very well. There are different types of bulb planter such as drill powered attachments and shorthand bulb planters, but for saving your back from bending over too much, I always go with a long handled bulb planter like this one from Draper tools-

You might not know this, but greenhouses are not just for summer. In fact, gardeners often house some of their delicate or less hardy plants in their greenhouses through the winter until they can be brought outside again.

For this, and other reasons, it is important that our greenhouses are kept warm during the winter, and one of the best ways to do that is with a greenhouse heater.

Like with everything these days, there are multiple types of heater: long tubular eco heaters, paraffin fueled heaters, and larger fan heaters.

In our opinion, the best greenhouse heater out there is the Bio Green 2kw parma heater with digital thermostat. It’s absolutely perfect for keeping temperatures right in the greenhouse, and can be bought here-

Well, that should give you a few Christmas present ideas for gardeners. As I said, I think most of us are easily pleased: new shiny tools, clothing, equipment, etc. So we think we have you covered with our shortlist here.
